Children Of Bodom Founder and Frontman Alexi “Wildchild” Laiho has died. He was only 41 years old.
One of the most renowned guitarists in the world is no longer with us: Alexi Laiho, known as the frontman of the band Children Of Bodom, passed away last week at his home in Helsinki, Finland. Laiho suffered from severe health problems in recent years.
Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen formed Children Of Bodom in 1993. the band became one of the most celebrated metal acts in Finland – until their last farewell concert in December 2019. last year, under Alexi Laiho, Bodom After Midnight was formed. The latter recorded three songs and a music video, which will now be released posthumously.
In addition to Children Of Bodom, Laiho earned a high reputation for his work in bands such as Warmen, Sinergy, Kylähullut and The Local Band. Awarded a Metal Hammer Golden Gods and numerous other international prizes, the guitarist was equally the main star at the 2015 Helsinki Festival when he led one hundred guitarists in “100 Guitars From Hel” – a stunning concert piece he composed.
Anchor in life
“We are devastated by the sudden death of our friend and bandmate. Words cannot capture this shock and the deep sorrow we feel,” say Daniel Freyberg, Mitja Toivonen and Waltteri Väyrynen of Bodom After Midnight. The talented guitarist and musician found happiness in his role as stepfather to his patchwork family, as well as uncle and godfather. Especially in recent years, his family has been an important anchor and balance to his life and touring. He was especially close to his big sister, his parents, and his sister’s daughter.
Laiho’s sister says, “We are absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these difficult times. My little brother’s funeral will be private.” The death of Alexi Laiho equally tears a big hole in the middle of his family in Australia. “Alexi was the most loving and best husband and father. Our hearts are forever broken,” Kelli Wright-Laiho said.
